Micro Niche Finder

If convenient, when I mention a product or service, I include an affiliate link to it. That means, if someone clicks on the link and makes a purchase, the vendor pays me something out of their advertising budget. I'd be foolish not to. Here is how my affiliate links work.

In these videos, we have seen how Micro Niche Finder integrates several website marketing tools. The last tool that we look at now is a keyword competition tool which calculates an estimate of the strength of the competition for the keyword. It looks up how many pages are being optimized for the keyword phrase. The more people who are optimizing for the phrase, the harder it will be to get to the top of the search engines for it.

The Strength of Competition for a keyword is the number of pages that

  1. have the keyword in the page title
  2. and in the URL of the page
  3. and in anchor text of a link to the page.
The people who have done all that to bring search engines to a page are intent on competing, so they'll likely keep making their pages better to keep ahead of yours.

This ends the videos on the website marketing tools that are built into Micro Niche Finder. The next video wraps up the discussion and shows how to save our niche market research in a project folder.

How to Compute the Strength of Competition Yourself

To estimate for the strength of competition for a keyword, we need to find which pages simultaneously have the keyword embedded in their URL, in the page title, and in anchor text of links pointing to the page. That can be discovered with a single Google query.

In a Google search window type for the keyword

inanchor:"keyword phrase" intitle:"keyword phrase" inurl:"keywordphrase"

and you will get the first 10 pages that simultaneously meet all those requirements. What Micro Niche Finder does is only a bit more complicated. To see what Micro Niche Finder does, in the address bar of your browser, type:

http://www.google.com/search?num=901&hl=en&q=inanchor%3A%22keyword+phrase%22+
intitle%3A%22keyword+phrase%22
+inurl%3A%22keywordphrase%22&start=900&sa=N&filter=0

but as a single line without a space. The '%22' translates into a quote; '+' into a space. You need to replace all spaces in your keyword phrase with +'s. This URL asks for the 100 search results (num=100) starting at 901 (start=901), and with all results returned (filter=0). If there are fewer than 901, the last matching pages will be returned. Micro Niche Finder just returns the number of the last result. If there are more than 1000 pages optimized for the keyword, Micro Niche Finder will report 1000.

The inurl is a little complicated to use:

  • If you just specify %22keyword+phrase%22 (i.e. quotes around the phrase and +'s where there are spaces), you will find pages that separate the words of the keyword phrase, e.g. www.domain.com/keyword-phrase-with-hyphens.html . the words of the keyword phrase cannot be run together.
  • If you squeeze out the spaces and specify %22keywordphrase%22, you will get www.domain.com/keywordphrasewithouthyphens.html . The words in the keyword phrase must be run together.
